MC Numbers, the Past??

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is eliminating Motor Carrier (MC) numbers, with the transition aiming for completion by October 1, 2025. This change is part of a broader effort to modernize the FMCSA’s Registration system, which will rely solely on the USDOT number for all carrier identification, including brokers and freight forwarders from here forth. The key goals are to improve efficiency, reduce freight fraud and simplify the identification process by creating a single point of record for all entities.

One of the biggest concerns in the trucking industry today is identity fraud, double brokering and carrier “churning,” in which a carrier with a bad safety record shuts down and reopens under a new MC number. By eliminating MC numbers and forcing all authority records to be tracked under a single USDOT number, FMCSA hopes to reduce fraud and hold carriers more accountable for their history.

This will be a process for all brokers as well, instead of the traditional MC Number all brokerages will be issued a USDOT number, which could impact future regulatory disciplines by adding extra levels of precautions that brokerages currently use.

Here at UCW, we are already using some of the most advanced technologies to protect our customers from fraudulent activity. We will continue to monitor this situation and evaluate all of our processes to ensure we stay on top of any USDOT changes.
